Hillel is a Jewish Community Center
Our programmatic vision creates multiple points of entry for Jewish students to Jewish community life. Hillel believes that when Jewish students get together to play sports, share meals, explore the outdoors, study, celebrate holidays or pursue other interests together they are actually creating Jewish community.
Hillel is a Synagogue
Actually, Hillel is all of the synagogues rolled into one! No one stream of Judaism owns Hillel - our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and traditions, and Hillel's role is to welcome all of them to explore and celebrate their Judaism in a manner that is both meaningful and comfortable.
Hillel is a Home Away From Home
Although Hillel programs can take place all over camps and beyond - in the student unions, residence halls, student apartments and homes, classrooms, clubs and coffee shops - the Oregon Hillel building is a welcoming and comfortable place to hang out between classes, meet friends, eat lunch, study, watch TV or use the student computer lab. For Hillel, "doing Jewish" means creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels like a member of a family.
Hillel is a Developer of Young Leaders
Hillel helps students who are looking for jobs or internships in the Jewish community whether it is a position working with a Jewish youth group, teaching religious school or interning at a Jewish agency. Hillel also sends students to various conferences focusing on leadership, text study, environmental issues, public policy and social action.
Hillel is a Jewish Community Relations Council
As evidenced by the number of students, faculty and community members that approach us regarding articles, editorials and political cartoons that appear in both campus, local and national publications, Hillel (and the resources we make available) play a central role in helping to empower students to respond and proactively engage when confronted with anti-Semitic and/or virulently anti-Israel materials.
Hillel is an Israel Resource Center
The State of Israel is central to the experience of the Jewish people throughout the world today. Hillel engages and empowers students to find and express their own personal connection to Israel through proactive and innovative educational and cultural programming, leadership training, and networking activities. Hillel celebrates the diversity of views held by students about issues related to Israel and fosters full and open dialog about these issues. Recognizing the central role that the state of Israel plays, Hillel also actively promotes Israel travel, study and training experiences through birthright trips, specialized Israel experiences and study abroad opportunities.
