JFGP's Community Relations Committee (CRC) develops and articulates consensus positions concerning matters of public importance on behalf of its constituency. It is the public affairs coordinating and advisory body for the organized Jewish community of NW Oregon and SW Washington.

The CRC seeks to promote mutual understanding among all groups in the greater community and to advance democratic pluralism, harmonious relationships, and respect for human dignity and individual rights across religious, racial, and ethnic lines. The CRC consists of a cross-section of Portland Jewry representing area organizations and synagogues.

If you like assessing current issues and developing strategies to further the interest of your community, CRC invites you to get involved. The following CRC committees meet regularly and are open to any member of the Jewish community:

  • Education and Advocacy Committee
  • Committee on Israel
  • Committee on Religion and the Public Schools

Oregonians who'd halt a nuclear Iran by divesting retirement plan stocks
By
The Oregonian Editorial Board

This May, a delegation from the Community Relations Committee met with the Oregonian editorial board to ask them to write an editorial urging the Oregon Investment Council to divest public employee retirement funds from foreign energy companies that are doing substantial business in Iran’s energy sector. Currently, the OIC has holdings in nine such companies, including Royal Dutch Shell and PetroChina, worth $252 million. (Three of these companies are also doing business in Sudan, indirectly financing genocide there.) On May 16, the Oregonian published the above editorial.

CRC joins with the Blue Door Project

In mid-June, the CRC joined forces with the King Neighborhood Association, participating in the Blue Door Project in Northeast Portland. Blue Door identifies elderly or disabled homeowners who can no longer take care of their yards and (in this case, with help from the CRC) recruits volunteers for a major clean-up effort. Pictured are three of the students who participated in the CRC’s Jewish/African-American mission to New Orleans last January—Shawn Rosenthal from Neveh Shalom and Joseph Young from St. Philip Episcopal (back row) and Valerie Trachtenberg from Havurah Shalom (front row). Also pictured are Jonathan Emanuel and Celeste Carey (front right), who accompanied the teens to New Orleans and led the team of volunteers to beautify the yard of a physically disabled homeowner.
