For many years the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland has supported the Jewish-Arab Volunteer Year Program.  A joint initiative of the Arab-Jewish Center for Equality, Empowerment and Cooperation – Negev Institute for Strategies of Peace and Development (AJEEC) and the Israel Scouts Movement, brings together Arab Bedouin and Jewish high school graduates for a gap-year program of full-time, joint community volunteerism.

Working in mixed teams, the volunteers conduct both formal and informal educational mentoring and enrichment programs for Arab children from the Negev Bedouin communities and Jewish children from Beer Sheva.  Graduates from this program note that it was a life-changing experience that opened their eyes to the possibilities of building a true shared society.
