On June 7th, Jewish Federation of Greater Portland's 2015 Song of Miriam Honoree, Sherry Fishman accepted her award from the Jewish Women's Roundtable, surrounded by other inspiring women of our community who have devoted their time to giving.
Take a moment to read Sherry's inspiring words about the meaning of this honor and service to others:
Today I sat with women from many organizations in the Jewish Community of Portland, who were receiving the Song of Miriam Award from the Jewish Women's Round Table. Each of the recipients was devoted to making the world a better place. I was the nominee from Jewish Federation this year.
With so many of us receiving this honor, there was no time to say anything about being a part of this community so I will say it here: I have been driven and inspired to make an effort for furthering the healing of the world because of my heritage, the people in our community, the larger community, my family and friends, and the never-ending need in a world still longing for peace and justice.
My congregation Temple Beth Israel, Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, the larger interfaith community, really wonderful State and National leaders, we are fortunate to have serve Oregon, and the fabulous family I am grateful to be a part of, are my source of inspiration, sustenance, and strength.
To all the women who received this award, to Bob Horenstein, Marc Blattner, Joanne VanNess Menashe, and Federation Board, and the Jewish Women's Round Table, Kol HaKavod and Todah Rabah.
We thank Sherry and all the honorees for their spirit of service which keeps our community alive.
