On Aug. 18, the Jewish Federation’s Community Relations Committee (CRC) hosted a brown-bag lunch with U.S. Member of Congress Suzanne Bonamici, representing Oregon’s First Congressional District. The Congresswoman had just returned from a week in Israel at a time when Hamas rockets were still targeting Israel’s civilian population.
Rep. Bonamici told the CRC that everywhere she went in Israel, people—from the Prime Minister to ordinary citizens—thanked her for coming and for Congressional funding of the Iron Dome anti-missile defense system, which has saved countless lives during the recent conflict. She reiterated Israel’s right—indeed its “obligation”—to defend its citizens and deplored Hamas’ use of its own civilians as human shields.
While much of the discussion focused on Israel, the Congresswoman, in response to an appeal from the CRC, also announced that she plans to cosponsor H.R. 5012, the Summer Meals Act, which would strengthen, protect and expand access to the Summer Nutrition Programs for low-income children. Passage of the legislation would help to reduce childhood hunger and combat child obesity.
