As we prepare to mark our bat mitzvah, Congregation Shir Tikvah is learning more about how we may be of service to the larger Jewish community. We’re excited to partner with other members of Portland’s Jewish community to offer this opportunity to learn about and properly care for sacred materials no longer in use.

Bring your any old, unusable sacred text you have – old Bibles, prayerbooks, papers – to River View Cemetery. Use the Main Entrance to meet at the Main Building starting at 10:30 am. Please wrap your materials in a brown paper bag.  Join us in a short ritual in which we reflect on our special relationship with the written and printed Hebrew word, and on the transitory nature of even our most cherished sacred objects.

If you are unable to attend this event, you may drop your materials at the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland prior to May 28.

Congregation Shir Tikvah and its partners offer this Jewish public service free of charge to the community;  however, donations to cover the costs of burial are gratefully accepted from those who are able.

Co-Sponsored by OJCYF, River View Cemetery Association, P'nai Or, and the Jewish Cemetery at River View.
