Scholar in Residence, Emanuel Ben-David

On Saturday, July 15, Havurah Shalom will welcome Emanuel Ben-David as our Scholar in Residence. As a rabbinical student, longtime service leader, and native Israeli, Emanuel notices nuances in Hebrew that result in teachings of great depth.

Emanuel will lead a community minyan from 10:00 am to noon, which will be followed by a potluck vegetarian lunch. In the afternoon, he will give two presentations.

The first presentation begins at 1:30 pm, and examines some of the driving forces and origins that make Israelis who they are. Emanuel will present "Ten Commandments" that define the typical Israeli, with each commandment supported by examples and facts. Many of the examples come from Emanuel's personal experience and are presented in a light and humorous fashion.

The second presentation begins at 3:00 pm and unveils Emanuel's personal experience working for decades for Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, one of the major three defense contractors in Israel. Among the technologies and products he will describe are the Iron Dome and David's Sling, two of the three layers of Israel's Missile Defense Architecture. He will also give an example of how defense technology has been transposed to the medical arena, providing breakthroughs in life saving practices.
