Sephardics labor to be recognized in the shadow of the Ashkenazis. But why? The history, culture and contribution of the Sephardim are magnificent and, for their size, unsurpassed.
From Maimonides laying the seeds of the Renaissance, to Spinoza triggering the Enlightenment, to Disraeli helping to create participatory democracy, the Sephardim, by thought and action, have helped form the modern world. The Sephardic who made law a matter of protection rather than oppression, who fused justice with law, who saw ethics to be the obligation of truth, and whose extended family helped build, enrich and give life to America, Benjamin Cardozo, epitomized Sephardic ideals.
These ideals center on reason, equity, community and individuality. In his talk, Joel Levin will discuss and celebrate the contributions of Justice Cardozo and the Sephardim to American life.
