Shirley Gittelsohn grew up in Portland, Oregon. Her education traversed Reed College, San Francisco State University, Portland State University, Art Institute of Oregon, and Oregon School of Arts and Crafts. Painting classes at Museum Art School, now Pacific Northwest College of Art, launched her career. She first painted portrait and figurative work of her children and nieces and nephews. Extremely large, expansive landscapes and abstracts of the Oregon Coast came next. Arlene Schnitzer represented Gittelsohn at the Fountain Gallery in Portland, where she had six solo shows between 1970 and 1981. Gittelsohn’s paintings are held numerous private and public collections including, the Multnomah Athletic Club; the Claremont Club and Spa in Berkeley, California; Reed College and the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education.
