Join us for a pre-Purim gathering of sisterhood, sweets, and celebration - for Portland Jewish women, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, and grandmothers.
The pre-Purim henna gathering, or "Leil Purim" is an old tradition of the Jews of Kurdistan. Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews often used henna to celebrate holidays and henna has been in continuous use by the Jewish people since ancient times. Purim was one of the Jewish religious holidays that regularly included henna. Kurdish Purim celebrates the beauty of brides, maidens, and beautiful young women, paralleling Esther's bridal beautification.
