Velada/Tikkun Leil Shavuot Learning Sessions
7:00p-12:00a | Various Leaders
There is the custom of staying up all night to study selections from the Torah and the Zohar which is called velada, from the Ladino word meaning to guard or watch. In Hebrew, this custom is known as Tikkun Leil Shavuot, meaning "rectification of the night of Shavuot," and is a traditional all-night study session on the eve of Shavuot, the Jewish holiday commemorating the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. It involves staying awake all night (or, as long as you can) to study religious texts, often a specially compiled syllabus, as a form of preparation for the following day's reading of the Ten Commandments. We are thrilled to have several talented community members who have offered to guide/teach sessions.
Tea, coffee, and sweets (including sütlaç, rice pudding!) will be served during velada sessions. Please note these sessions will NOT be streamed online; only in-person attendance is available.
