Join us for a historic walking tour of Jewish South Portland
We begin the walk on Lair Hill at the original Neighborhood House, (now an active Waldorf School) then proceed through what was once the heart of the immigrant neighborhood. Along the way, we'll learn about the people and places that contributed to the rich history of Portland's Jewish community, including five razed and relocated synagogues.
As we walk, you'll hear from our docents about the city's first urban renewal projects of the early 1960s, which irreparably changed the physical, social and cultural landscape of the neighborhood. We will end the tour on the campus of Portland State University (PSU) at Shattuck Elementary, one building now repurposed for the University.
Stick around afterwards for post-tour refreshments at a local neighborhood pub and keep the conversation going! (food and drinks not included in price of tour.)
