Lois Sussman Shenker is both a professional and volunteer leader in Portland’s Jewish Community. Her career ranges from Director of the MJCC’s Early Childhood Learning Center to Administrator of the Oregon Board of Rabbis Introduction to Judaism program to facilitator of Mother’s Circle. An author of 2 previous books, her newest, co-authored with Rabbi Eve Posen, is Pirkei Imahot: The Wisdom of Mothers, The Voices of Women.
Lois’s Federation involvement spans decades. Early on, she chaired the second-ever Super Sunday in Portland, and was part of the original group of women to serve on the Women’s Committee, the precursor to today’s Women’s Philanthropy program. She demonstrated her passion for Israel as overseer of Yitzhak Rabin’s early 70s visit to Portland, chair of Federation’s celebration of Israel’s 40th Independence Day and led 4 missions to Israel with husband, Arden, 2 through Portland Federation and 2 through National/UJA. More recently, Lois co-chaired the Federation’s Limmud Day of Learning and for 32 years has chaired the Federation Sussman Fund Scholarship Committee.
Married for 56 years, Lois and Arden are the proud parents of 3 children and their mates, 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
