Free Public lecture about Marion Bauer, woman composer from Portland who became famous in New York in the early to mid 20th century.

Portland Youth Philharmonic, the nation's first youth orchestra, will perform a work of Marion's called "Sun Splendor", on its March 5th concert at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

On Friday, PYP is presenting Dr. Susan Pickett, Music Chair from Whitman College, to speak about Bauer and her sister Emilie Frances. Pickett has written a biography of the sisters published last year, "From the Wild West to American Musical Modernism." Books will be available for purchase.

About Marion: Marion Bauer was born in Walla Walla about 1882 to French Jewish immigrants. She graduated from high school in Portland in 1898. Her family belonged to Congregation Beth Israel and her mother and brother are buried here.  After high school Marion went to New York City to live with her older sister, Emilie Frances and immerse herself in the exciting music world of the early 20th century. When her sister died young, Marion took over her music critic position, in addition to being a composer herself and teaching composition. She also founded some of the institutions that still exist today o support living composers. Dr. Pickett has many stories to tell of her research, and of the extraordinary life of Marion Bauer.
